Are you nostalgic about Jaws 3-D (AKA Jaws 3) right now?
Way back in 1983, I had my first-ever 3D viewing experience inside the movie theater here in the Philippines. I saw the movie Jaws 3-D (AKA Jaws 3) on the big-screen using disposable 3D glasses and the theater was packed with lots of moviegoers who screamed from time to time. If you are not familiar with movie history, Jaws 3-D was the 3rd movie of the Jaws movie franchise which itself started…

You seem rather optimistic about downsizing the team, but are you sure that a small team is enough to run Tumblr? Since Tumblr's last peak, a lot of social media sites have gotten a lot better at the things Tumblr previously (and currently) excelled at. For example, Twitter now allows long posts and 4K image uploads, latter affects the art community a lot (I understand hosting images costs a lot and Tumblr hasn't really been doing financially well). Are you sure the small team is enough to upgrade these aspects? Are there maybe any plans to cross pollinate the team?
The good news about Moore's law is storage, compute, and bandwidth gets cheaper every year. It's funny you point to Twitter adding things we already had, like long posts and high-resolution images. We'll continue stay on the bleeding edge of what technology allows and enables, and hopefully provide pressure for other social networks to step up their game, as they have with dozens of features Tumblr invented and others followed.
I am super open to feedback and engagement with artist communities on what we can provide. Images are easy. Super high res video and streaming probably needs to be paid, but not expensive, and we have some cool Vimeo/Youtube alternative technology at VideoPress.

4k video is so unwieldy for porn. If you don't raise the bit rate then it literally ends up being lower quality than 1080p video and if you do raise it then the file sizes get out of hand (sites like ManyVids have file size limits).
And to what end!? Nobody wants to see human skin in that level of detail when they're masturbating! Plus I don't even own a 4k monitor! MPC HC and VLC don't seem to scale videos down very gracefully, so it introduces a ton of aliasing when I watch 4k video on my 1080p monitor (this is obviously not an issue with other video players though and could possibly even be corrected with settings changes)! And people are watching fake 4k Hollywood movies (with 1080p digital intermediates) and thinking they look great! What's the point!?
So even tho I film basically everything in 4k I release most of it in 1080p (which feels like a decision I'll regret in five or ten years when hardware and standards have improved, but oh well). And most recently I've been doing this with an effect applied that does NOTHING just to force Premiere Pro to use software video scaling (because somehow the hardware video scaling introduces a weird image sharpening style of aliasing on certain high contrast edges that nobody else seems to notice or care about).
Only lately (meaning I've rendered out a few videos this way, but haven't released them, so I have time to flip flop on the decision) I've been editing videos in actual 4k and just applying blur to em. Enough blur to make it actually SLIGHTLY perceivable even when played back at half scale on a 1080p monitor.
This has the upsides of the actual resolution being in 4k (so if/when things get uploaded to streaming sites that reencode everything then it'll give people the option of watching in 4k just for the higher bitrate) while cutting down on most of the downsides. Fewer compression artifacts (since there's less detail). Less video player aliasing (since there's less detail). And I think the final image looks pretty much fine (barely any softer than the scaling to 1080p approach).
I feel like this is obviously a weirdo choice to make tho. Just outright blurring everything (which is distinctly different from skin blurring). I feel like I need to talk myself out of it.

My 1TB microSD card arrived!
Finally. Took some farting around before my Steam Deck said "Oh! I see you stuck a card in the slot!" and let me format it for Linux plus set it as my default storage drive, and now I'm going to spend some time installing a bunch of my favourite games on the deck, particularly any that either a) I think would be fun casual games to have handy when away from home for whatever reason, or b) I'm likely to want to keep playing rather than going to put my feet up when I should, so the option of playing them on the deck directly or via streaming will encourage me to take breaks.
To date I've just been streaming to the deck from my nice gaming laptop, which has meant things like not needing to fiddle around with cloud saves, plus if I'm just using it to monitor the progress of something that takes a long time in-game but doesn't require my direct management (like building the really big monuments in Timberborn, which can take real-time hours to build) I can just walk back over to my full gaming setup if I want to fiddle with stuff in game (which is a major PITA with only the deck's built-in controllers and only somewhat improved with my bluetooth mouse). Here's me doing exactly that while getting in some crochet and foot-elevation time last night, while my tablet reads aloud to me:
Tumblr media
(Yeah that's the moss bed bedding and pillows and plushies, with my duvet piled off to the side since we're still in weather that can't make up its mind about whether it's going to get cold enough to need it at night or not.)
I've already gone ahead and purchased a 3rd party deck dock, and have a semi-decent portable monitor all picked out; not a 4k one, I don't even bother with that for my actual gaming setup, just a decent quality FHD one that does the same resolution as my current desktop monitor. Will probably watch for a pre- or post-Christmas sale on it before purchasing, since it's not like I have a burning need for one; it'll just make actual gaming rather easier and less eye-straining. At that point I'll be treating my deck like I treat my laptop; as a device off to the side that does the work while I use an actual monitor/keyboard/mouse setup.
Granted in this case they're all going to be portable versions of same. Perched on a bed tray (unless I go full out and also buy a bed desk or overbed table).

From the Feeder 5-17 to 5-23
I won't lie, I've had a rough week. Amidst multiple breaks of bad new in my life and getting sick, I've found myself in a funk. There's a chance I may not even have a job in the coming weeks or months, so the bird feeders and the livestream have been a comfort of mine and may even become more important as time progresses.
But enough about hardship, lets look at some pretty birds and talk shop about the birdfeeder livestream.
Our first new visitor of the week is in fact our turkey who finally decided it was worth coming all the way to the feeder.
Wild Turkey
Tumblr media
I was also finally able to get photos of our House finches who made themselves right at home the past few days.
House finch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another exciting visitor that proved difficult to photograph was a Ruby-throated hummingbird that stopped by a few times just before dusk when my camera would have the most challenging time catching it.

Tumblr media
And finally, our surprise star visitor, at least in my book was in fact our Pileated woodpecker who decided to swoop in and make his presence known at both our suet blocks. I just happened to be lucky enough to be around and catch him both on a video clip and in photos below! I'm still stunned at how big they are. That also makes 4 species of woodpecker to visit now!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course we had some of our regulars! I'll add those to the bottom of this post.
----------------------------
Stream Updates
Okay, we only made a few minor updates this week. Here's a rough breakdown of the improvements:
Added a running timestamp to the stream to better help people look back through the stream to find things people may talk about in the chat.
Moved the feeders slightly closer to the camera. This should help improve video quality while cameras are zoomed in.
Investigated ways to lower the latency so there's not a 25 second lag between inputting a command in chat and seeing anything happen. (this frustrates me too since a bird may be gone by the time I zoom in or pull up the audio)
The first two changes are simple quality of life, the last one is something where I want your feedback and input. The conclusion I've come to is that youtube will only allow ultra-low latency on videos that 1080p or less. If we dropped to 1080p we could have a lag of only 3-5 seconds at the expense of 4k. So which do you prefer? Less lag or 4k video. Please let me know and I'll take it into consideration.
Final Thing
One of these days when I'm not feeling sick, I'm thinking about doing a birdwatching livestream where we can all watch the bird feeders together and talk about the birds and behaviors they are showcasing. I'm by no means an expert, but I would enjoy sending a morning truly birdwatching with y'all. Let me know in a reply as well if this is of interest too

Better than Streaming: Do you have Cloak & Dagger (1984) 4K Blu-ray in your collection?
Welcome back, fellow geeks, Blu-ray collectors and movie buffs! Decades ago, I saw on home video Cloak & Dagger (1984) which turned out to be an entertaining film to watch as I was already playing games on Atari 2600 and the arcades. After replaying by chance on cable TV years later, I finally bought myself the 4K Blu-ray and it sure was fun to watch it all over again. Check out my retro movie…

To the 5 most loyal Three-Body fans still left on tumblr, I bear news that's both "bad" and good: Tencent's youtube channel just recently turned episode 3 to 30 of Three-Body to members only. The bad news is for those who haven't watched the show, you have no more legal and free access. The good news is that since you didn't bother to watch it in the past 10 months, you deserve to pay for this amazing show in the future.
The removal of free access to the show on youtube was actually talked about by fans after PBS announced the airing of the show in September. Now that more and more paid streaming services and TV channels around the world start to air Three-Body, of course, the free access would be gone.
One more reason behind this might be that Three-Body is participating in MIPCOM Cannes this year (a trade show for TV programs). I heard that our beloved show's poster gets to be displayed at the best spot at the entrance to the main theatre (THEY ACTUALLY PICKED MY FAVE POSTER because that's also my phone's lock screen). Three-Body already aired in 20ish countries, and I hope it will sell big and air in even more countries in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
edit in Nov: you can still watch it for free on youtube here from MiGu Official's channel, but they don't have 4k resolution and they have hard Chinese subs. The good thing is they don't have the tencent logo.

IPTV how to get it: with MegaOTT IPTV
Unlock the World of Streaming: A Complete Guide to Getting IPTV with MegaOTT
In this fast-paced digital era, the way we consume entertainment is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Conventional cable and satellite services, once considered the go-to for entertainment, are now being overshadowed by the rising popularity of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). If you’re curious about how to get IPTV and why services like MegaOTT are gaining unprecedented followings, you’ve come to the right place. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about IPTV, the myriad benefits it offers, and how you can find the best IPTV provider available.
So, what exactly is IPTV? In simple terms, it’s a modernized way of watching television. Gone are the days of relying on satellite dishes or cumbersome cables. IPTV grants you access to an impressive array of content by streaming it directly over the internet. This means that you can indulge in live TV, movies, and series on any device you own—be it a smartphone, a smart TV, a tablet, or even a PC. All you need is a stable internet connection, and you’re good to go.
Now, let’s delve into the process of obtaining IPTV, which is surprisingly straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:
Step 1: Choose an IPTV Provider Not all IPTV services are created equal. It’s crucial to select a reliable provider that offers a diverse range of channels, high-quality streaming, and exceptional customer support. One provider that deserves your attention is MegaOTT. They go above and beyond, providing an impressive selection of live TV channels, movies, and series, including access to sports events in stunning 4K quality.
Step 2: Sign Up for a Subscription Providers usually offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to suit your needs. With MegaOTT, you’ll find affordable plans starting at an incredibly low price of $3.99. What’s even better is that they offer a free trial, so you can personally experience the service before making a commitment.
Step 3: Set Up Your IPTV App Once you’ve completed the signup process, you’ll need to download an IPTV player that is compatible with your device. Luckily, there are numerous apps available, such as IPTV Smarters, GSE Smart IPTV, and others. Simply input the credentials provided by your IPTV provider into one of these apps.
Step 4: Start Watching! After the setup is complete, you can immediately start streaming your favorite movies and series on your chosen device. The world of content is now at your fingertips.
Now that you know how to get IPTV, let’s explore why MegaOTT is the ideal choice when selecting an IPTV provider. Here are the reasons that set them apart:
Extensive Channel List: MegaOTT offers an extensive range of channels from around the globe, spanning everything from sports and news to movies and entertainment, all available for streaming in high-definition and even dazzling 4K resolution.
Affordable Plans: MegaOTT understands the importance of value for money. Their IPTV subscriptions start at just $3.99, making them one of the most competitively priced providers in the market. Moreover, they offer a free trial so that you can experience the quality for yourself before making a financial commitment.
High Streaming Quality: Whether you’re indulging in live sports, movies, or binge-watching your favorite series, MegaOTT guarantees top-tier streaming quality with minimal buffering. When it comes to IPTV services, they truly are among the best in the business.
User-Friendly Interface: MegaOTT has designed their platform with simplicity in mind. With their intuitive interface, navigation becomes a breeze, offering a hassle-free experience for users of all ages and technical capabilities. Even if you’re new to the world of IPTV, MegaOTT ensures that the process is accessible to all.
When you’re on the lookout for the ideal IPTV provider, keep the following tips in mind:
Channel Selection: Ensure that the provider offers channels that align with your interests and preferences, whether that means local channels, international networks, or even niche sports coverage.
Customer Support: A reliable IPTV provider should always provide exceptional customer service in case you encounter any issues with your connection or setup. That way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that help is just a call or message away.
Trial Periods: Always check if the provider offers a free trial. This allows you the opportunity to test the service without any long-term commitments. It’s the perfect way to get a real taste of what the provider offers before making a decision.
Device Compatibility: Before committing to a provider, ensure that their service is compatible with the devices you intend to use. Whether it’s smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, or streaming boxes, compatibility is key.

media producers/distributors refusing to release physicals sucks but also doing DVD-only releases with no bluray/4K is so bullshit as well like people's TVs keep getting better and better and bigger and you're only selling standard definition because you want people to sign up for your silly streaming services but even that "high definition" can never be truly supported by current internet capabilities like 1080p/4K streams despite their technical resolution still look like shit compared to actual bluray/uhd discs

Commercial rights: +50% base price for digital, +100% base price for merchandise
More info:
Commissioner will receive a 1080p 300dpi .jpg and a lossless .png of the artwork. I can also work at bigger resolutions, but my computer doesn't allow me to go over 4k.
No major revisions past sketch phase unless I forgot an important detail (but I can still do minor adjustments, i.e: color correction)
I will send captures of the piece for each stage: sketch, base color, final. You may ask for updates at any time.
I might stream the process on Twitch/Discord unless the commissioner doesn't want me to (Let me know in advance) and I also might post the finished commission (at a low resolution and watermarked) on my social media.
You may ask questions here or DM me on Twitter or Discord: Suminoze
